Bass Weejuns Penny Loafers

In this country, it is pretty well known that the Bass Shoe Company brought us the penny loafer as we know it. The penny loafer was supposedly discovered by Mr. Bass when traveling in Norway he saw farmers wearing a different looking style hand sewn moccasin shoe that looked very comfortable compared to oxfords and stiff leather boots. He decided to bring this style to the U.S. and manufacture them. Mr. Bass called the shoes Weejuns, short for Norwegians. It didn’t take long for Americans to start wearing Bass Penny Loafers and tell their friends and family how comfortable these new bass penny loafers were. The loafers got their name penny loafers because children and teenagers started putting a penny in the slot. Because of the popularity of Bass weejuns penny loafers, it didn’t take long before all the other shoe makers decided to make their own version of the penny loafer. Such is the problem in shoe industry. Penny loafers come in two basic styles, the regular strap one and the beef roll style named for the way the end of the moccasin top is rolled and stitched to look like a tied up beef roll. They are basically manufactured the same way, by hand. Genuine moccasin construction with a solid hand stitched top to the bottom of the upper that cradles the foot like a glove for comfort. The entire upper will be stitched to the leather sole and heel attached afterward. The great thing about wearing penny loafers is that they break in and become more comfortable as you wear them. The shoes eventually mold to your feet becoming almost custom fitted. It doesn’t take long for penny loafers to become a friend to your feet.
